Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced a special support package for Ghanaians being evacuated from South Africa following ongoing xenophobic attacks in the country.
In a post shared on X on May 20, 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs disclosed that the government had introduced several relief measures to support affected citizens upon their return to Ghana.
According to Ablakwa, the package is intended to help returnees reintegrate smoothly into society after being displaced by the attacks.
“Evacuation from South Africa; the Government of Ghana announces that all Ghanaians being evacuated from South Africa due to ongoing xenophobic attacks shall be entitled to the following,” part of the post stated.
The minister outlined the support measures to include a welcome home financial package, transportation assistance to destinations across the country, and a reintegration allowance.
The package will also provide free psychosocial support services for victims and place returnees into a special government database for employment and startup opportunities.
The benefits announced include:
• Welcome Home Financial Package
• Transportation Assistance to various destinations across Ghana
• Reintegration Allowance
• Free Psychosocial Support
• Entry into a special database for jobs and startup opportunities
Ablakwa assured affected citizens that the government remains committed to protecting their welfare.
“We value and cherish all our citizens,” part of the statement added.
The evacuation exercise follows renewed concerns over xenophobic violence in South Africa, where foreign nationals, including African migrants, have periodically been targeted in attacks.
