Parliament has officially confirmed the arrest of Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament Ohene Kwame Frimpong in the Netherlands, following reports that emerged over the weekend.

In a statement issued by the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, and shared on Parliament’s official social media platforms, the House disclosed that Speaker Alban Bagbin has been briefed on the matter and that steps are being taken to gather more information.

According to the statement, Parliament’s leadership is currently engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague regarding the detention of the legislator.

“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, in the Netherlands,” the statement said.

“The Rt Hon Speaker and the leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” it added.

Earlier reports indicated that sources within Ghana’s law enforcement agencies had confirmed the MP’s arrest in connection with an investigation reportedly linked to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

According to sources familiar with the case, the lawmaker is being investigated over alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and suspected romance scams involving an estimated US$32 million.

The investigation is said to have been ongoing for more than a year, with authorities reportedly arresting the MP in the Netherlands over the weekend.

While details surrounding the arrest remain limited, officials are yet to publicly confirm the exact charges or provide full details about the scope of the investigation.

Reports further indicate that the case forms part of a broader international operation involving law enforcement agencies across several countries.

At the time of reporting, neither Ohene Frimpong nor his representatives had issued an official response to the allegations, while Ghanaian authorities had also not publicly commented beyond Parliament’s statement.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
