Former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo has called for the immediate suspension or interdiction of all public officials implicated in the latest Auditor-General’s report concerning the probe of GH¢68.7 billion in claims.  Speaking in an interview, Mr. Domelevo argued that administrative sanctions should be the first step in ensuring accountability.

Mr. Domelevo stated that any official suspected of wrongdoing or malpractice should be suspended immediately to allow for thorough investigations without interference.

He emphasized that these officials can return to their roles if investigations eventually clear them of any wrongdoing. He also noted that while Parliament reviews these reports, it lacks the power to impose sanctions. Therefore, the executive branch must take the lead by applying administrative measures before parliamentary deliberations conclude. Mr. Domelevo pointed out that the Office of the Attorney-General is responsible for subsequent investigations and any necessary criminal prosecutions

He argued that immediate suspension sends a strong message to the public that financial malfeasance will not be tolerated in Ghana.  Mr. Domelevo’s calls follow an audit into GH¢68.7 billion in claims submitted by contractors and suppliers as outstanding payments at the end of 2024. Out of this total, GH¢8.1 billion was rejected due to irregularities, while GH¢13.3 billion remains under review because of missing documents or incomplete contracts.
