Chelsea have opened an investigation after a bottle was thrown towards the Aston Villa bench following their 2–1 Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
After the final whistle, an open plastic bottle was hurled in the direction of Villa’s celebrating bench, splashing players and staff with what appeared to be water. One member of the Villa backroom team was seen pointing towards the area from which the bottle was thrown, believed to be a section occupied by both Chelsea supporters and club staff.
Responsibility for the incident remains unclear. Chelsea have confirmed that an internal investigation is underway, although the club has yet to issue an official statement.
It is also uncertain whether referee Stuart Attwell or his match officials witnessed the incident, or if it will be referenced in the official match report. The Football Association has been contacted for comment.
On the pitch, Villa came from behind to secure the win, with substitute Ollie Watkins scoring twice after João Pedro had given Chelsea a first-half lead.
The victory sees Unai Emery’s side equal a club record of 11 consecutive wins in all competitions and move to within three points of Premier League leaders Arsenal, sitting third in the table. Chelsea are fifth ahead of Sunday’s fixtures.
