The Tertiary Education Workers’ Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has strongly denounced what it terms an “illegal and misleading” claim by Mr. Charles Arthur, the Union’s Local Chairman at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Mr. Arthur has been circulating information suggesting he is the National Chairman of the Union.

In a statement issued by the National Secretariat on Saturday, November 29, 2025, TEWU-GH stressed that Mr. Arthur’s actions constitute a deliberate misrepresentation intended to sow confusion among its members and stakeholders. The Secretariat firmly stated that Mr. Arthur has no mandate to speak or act on behalf of TEWU-GH at the national level.

Alleged Unconstitutional Actions

According to the Union, Mr. Arthur has recently engaged in a series of unconstitutional and disruptive actions. These include:

  • Convening unauthorised meetings.
  • Mobilising a small group to support his “divisive agenda.”
  • Orchestrating the signing of a letter dated November 5, 2025, in an attempt to unilaterally declare himself National Chairman.

TEWU-GH revealed that although Mr. Arthur was cautioned after the letter was circulated, he allegedly disregarded the directive. He further refused to attend a meeting scheduled for November 27, 2025, which was intended to address the matter amicably.

Instead of cooperating, he released yet another statement proclaiming himself National Chairman and threatening strike action if the Union does not receive its bargaining certificate by December.

Leadership and Regulatory Concerns

The National Secretariat described Mr. Arthur’s behaviour as “immature” and “gross misconduct,” emphasizing that leadership within TEWU-GH is determined strictly through established constitutional procedures—not through personal declarations.

The statement also revealed that Mr. Arthur’s refusal to follow due process, particularly concerning the bargaining certificate, has reportedly contributed to delays in its issuance during engagements with the National Labour Commission and the Labour Department.

Stakeholders, including university authorities, regulators, and the public, have been urged to ignore communications from Mr. Arthur or any group aligned with him, as TEWU-GH insists he does not represent the Union and has no authority to issue directives on its behalf.
