Tension is high in Awutu Kwashie Abbey, located in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region, following the arrest of four soldiers and two national security operatives by the Bawjiase District Police Command. The arrests occurred during an alleged attempt to install a rival chief in the community.
According to reports, police intervened after receiving information that a group of individuals was attempting to enstool a new chief despite the presence of a legally recognised traditional ruler, Nai Kwashie Abbey VII.
The arrest of the security officers sparked anger among supporters of the incumbent chief, who gathered at the police station demanding the release of the suspects. Some protesters reportedly threatened violence if their demands were not met.
The tense standoff escalated until a military vehicle with registration number 52 GA 62 arrived at the scene with additional personnel, reportedly to secure the release of the detained officers.
Asafo members loyal to Nai Kwashie Abbey VII have since condemned the attempted installation, accusing some state security agencies of meddling in local chieftaincy affairs.
Speaking to reporters, the leader of the group, Asafo Supi Nipa-Nka, urged the military and national security operatives to refrain from involving themselves in traditional disputes. He warned that such interference could provoke unnecessary conflict and destabilise the community.
