In a recent statement in Accra, Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways, described Ghana’s road network as being in a “very deplorable state”.

Speaking at a Government Accountability Series event, Minister Agbodza said many of the nation’s primary and secondary roads are littered with potholes, eroded surfaces and failing bridges—conditions he said are undermining economic activity and putting lives at risk.

He attributed the current condition to years of neglect, inadequate maintenance, and poor contract supervision under previous administrations. He also revealed that almost all major road projects across the country are currently stalled, citing unsustainable levels of awarding contracts without regard for funding availability.

The Minister assured Ghanaians that his Ministry is auditing the existing infrastructure and prioritising critical corridors for immediate intervention. He emphasised that the government would no longer delay payments to contractors, and that projects would only be awarded when funding is secured.
