The Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has announced a nationwide withdrawal of services starting Tuesday, October 7, 2025, in protest against prolonged salary delays, stalled postings, and what it calls “persistent unfair treatment” by government authorities.

In a statement dated October 2, and signed by Dr. Louisa Afia Nkrumah (President) and Dr. Rhoda Wun-nam Amadu (General Secretary), the Association revealed that over 200 junior doctors have worked for 10 to 14 months without receiving salaries.

The statement further disclosed that the salaries of some medical officers, who were previously on the government payroll, have been suspended without explanation. Additionally, more than 800 qualified doctors have been awaiting official postings for the past 16 months, despite numerous engagements with relevant authorities.

“Despite showing goodwill toward the government, no tangible solutions have been offered. The continued exploitation of junior doctors will no longer be tolerated,” the statement said.

Phased Withdrawal of Services

The JDA has outlined a two-phase service withdrawal:

  • October 7–9: All outpatient services will be suspended.
  • Starting October 10: Emergency services will also be withdrawn indefinitely.

The Association clarified that current inpatients will continue to receive care until discharge, but no new admissions will be accepted during the strike.

The JDA placed full responsibility for the looming healthcare disruption on the Ministry of Health and the Government of Ghana, calling for urgent intervention from stakeholders to address the growing crisis.
