President John Dramani Mahama has issued a strong warning to individuals involved in romance scams, stating that perpetrators—whether Ghanaian or foreign nationals—will face extradition and prosecution in accordance with international laws.
Speaking at the launch of Cyber Security Awareness Month in Accra on Wednesday, October 1, the President emphasized that Ghana is actively working with global partners to combat the growing threat of online fraud.
“We’ve been collaborating with our international partners. When evidence is gathered and it is proven that people are involved in romance scams, we use our extradition treaties to return the culprits for prosecution,” President Mahama stated.
He noted that Ghana will continue to rely on existing extradition agreements to ensure suspects are held accountable in the appropriate jurisdictions.
“Anyone involved in romance scams—whether a Ghanaian or a foreigner—will be handed over to face trial and be punished accordingly,” he stressed.
President Mahama underscored that these actions are critical to safeguarding both Ghanaian citizens and the country’s international reputation, warning that cybercrime of any kind will not be tolerated.
