Kwasi Sibo’s transfer to Libyan champions Al-Swehly has taken several unexpected turns, with a collapsed Turkish deal, a lucrative offer, family consultations and a last-minute ultimatum all playing a part in the Ghana international’s decision.
After leaving Spanish side Real Oviedo, Sibo attracted interest from several clubs following his performances for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Turkey looked set to be his destination
By August, Turkish Super Lig side Genclerbirligi had emerged as Sibo’s preferred option.
The midfielder had reportedly reached a preliminary agreement with the Ankara-based club over a two-year contract, with an option for a further season.
The move appeared to be close to completion until Genclerbirligi changed their plans.
The Turkish club opted to strengthen their midfield with Senegal international Cheikh Niasse, leaving Sibo without a deal despite the earlier understanding.
Then Al-Swehly arrived
With the Turkish move collapsing, Al-Swehly quickly entered the picture.
The Libyan champions were reportedly prepared to offer Sibo a package worth around $10 million, an amount far more attractive than what had been discussed in Turkey.
Although reports have differed over the exact duration and structure of the proposed contract, the size of the reported offer immediately made the transfer one of the major talking points surrounding a Ghanaian player.
Sibo travels to Cairo
On Monday, August 24, 2026, Sibo travelled to Cairo, Egypt, where Al-Swehly were based ahead of their CAF Champions League preliminary-round campaign.
His arrival suggested that the final stages of the transfer were underway, with a medical examination and contract signing expected to follow.
But the move was not yet done.
Family talks delay final decision
Reports from the negotiations indicated that Sibo became hesitant about immediately signing the contract after arriving in Cairo.
The midfielder reportedly wanted to return to Accra to consult his family before making the final decision.
That development briefly cast doubt over a transfer that had appeared almost certain to happen.
Al-Swehly issues ultimatum
The situation reportedly became more tense when Al-Swehly made their position clear.
According to reports surrounding the negotiations, Sibo was told that he had to complete the signing before leaving the club’s camp or risk seeing the proposed deal collapse.
The midfielder was therefore faced with a crucial decision after travelling to Cairo, either return home to discuss the move with his family or stay and complete the transfer.
He eventually chose to remain with the club.
Sibo completes move
Several reports indicate that Sibo has now completed his transfer to Al-Swehly, bringing an eventful few days to an end.
He is expected to return to Accra on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, while Al-Swehly prepare for their upcoming CAF Champions League campaign.
The move represents another major step in Sibo’s career after his World Cup appearance for Ghana and the collapse of what had appeared to be a straightforward switch to Turkey.
