Two men have been arrested by the Greater Accra Police Command for allegedly offering GH¢30,000 to a police commander in exchange for the release of a truck and suspected narcotic substances.
The suspects have been identified as Mark Bangel, a trader from Kpandai in the Oti Region, and Zakaria Arafat, a mechanic from Kpando in the Volta Region.
According to a report by citinewsroom.com on September 22, 2026, the arrests followed investigations into the alleged transportation and distribution of suspected narcotic drugs in Accra.
The case dates back to Friday, September 11, when officers of the Bravo SWAT Unit, acting on intelligence, intercepted a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GN 5581-13 at Abofu, near Achimota.
Police said the truck was travelling from Kpandai and was suspected of transporting narcotic substances into Accra.
The occupants reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled after spotting the police.
A search of the truck led to the discovery of 175 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs. The substances were allegedly concealed in three sacks and three “Ghana Must Go” bags.
The truck and the recovered exhibits were subsequently conveyed to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Police said Bangel and Arafat later appeared at the Regional Police Headquarters, claiming ownership of both the truck and the recovered substances.
Investigators subsequently alleged that the two men attempted to influence the Bravo SWAT Unit Commander by offering him GH¢30,000 to secure the release of the vehicle and the suspected narcotics.
The police said the suspects were immediately arrested, while the alleged bribe money was retrieved.
Further investigations have also reportedly identified a third person, known only as Salam, as being connected to the operation.
According to the police, Salam allegedly drove the truck and the suspected narcotic substances from Kpandai to Accra before abandoning the vehicle when officers intercepted it.
The police said efforts are currently underway to locate and arrest Salam as investigations into the case continue.
