President John Dramani Mahama has urged extensive consultation with Ghana’s Christian community before any decision is made on the proposed national cathedral, emphasizing that the project should reflect the views of all citizens while remaining financially prudent.

During a courtesy visit by the Christian Council of Ghana to Jubilee House, President Mahama acknowledged the importance of an interdenominational place of worship but stressed that the scope and cost must be carefully evaluated.

“I do believe in building an interdenominational place where we can worship, but it must be done in consultation with all of us. All of us must decide how we want to do it, what the scope is, and how much it will cost,” he said.

While addressing broader national issues, including the anti-LGBTQ bill and corruption, the President noted that the national cathedral project would only move forward after full engagement with stakeholders.

President Mahama raised concerns over the reported $400 million budget for the cathedral, calling it excessive given Ghana’s current economic challenges. He referenced Nigeria’s ecumenical centre as an example, describing it as “a decent, beautiful place” built for $40 million, highlighting the possibility of a more cost-effective approach.

He added that a forensic audit of the proposed project would be conducted first, followed by broad consultations to determine the best way to construct a national place of worship that is “decent” and truly reflective of the Christian community.

The President also emphasized that the cathedral could serve as a cultural and architectural landmark, celebrating the role of faith in Ghanaian society.
