The Ghana Police Service has apprehended five suspects linked to the violent assault of Michael Quayson, a teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in the Kwaebibirim Municipality.

The arrests took place on Monday, January 5, 2026, after the suspects reportedly traveled from Accra to Kade as part of the ongoing probe into the attack, which occurred late last year.

Awoonor Yevu Godwin, Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), confirmed to Citi News that the suspects are scheduled to appear before the Kade Circuit Court on Wednesday, January 7.

The Police Cyber Security Unit is leading the investigation, highlighting the service’s dedicated effort to ensure accountability for crimes against educators.

Background of the Attack

The assault occurred on October 5, 2025, between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., when Quayson was ambushed on his way home. Family members reported that a group of eight individuals, including current and former Kade SHTS students, attacked him near his residence.

Although the group fled when relatives arrived, video footage of the incident went viral on social media. Reports suggest that the teacher was targeted due to his strict disciplinary measures on campus and vigilance during the recent WASSCE examinations.

Before these latest arrests, only one student had been taken into custody and later granted bail, raising concerns about teacher safety in the Kwaebibirem Municipality.

The Quayson family, with support from teacher unions, has called on the government, the Ministry of Education, and the Ghana Police Service to strengthen protection for educators. They stressed that prosecuting the five suspects is crucial to ensuring justice and deterring future attacks on teachers.
