The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has confirmed the conviction and sentencing of two men involved in a high-profile gold robbery at Kyekyewere near Obuasi, following extensive investigations and a full trial at the Bekwai Circuit Court.
In a statement issued on Friday, police said the convicts—Francis Oppong, also known as Kwame Abuu, and Francis Nyamekye, also known as Amearo—were found guilty for their roles in a violent robbery that occurred in December 2023.
The two were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, aiding and abetting robbery, and robbery, contrary to Sections 23(1), 20(1), and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
They were first arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court on January 30, 2024, after police concluded prolonged investigations that involved the gathering of critical evidence linking them to the crime.
After a full trial, the court on January 5, 2026 convicted both men. Francis Oppong was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labour, while Francis Nyamekye was handed a 25-year sentence, also with hard labour. Both convicts will serve their sentences at the Kumasi Central Prison.
According to police, the robbery took place on December 16, 2023, and targeted a small-scale miner at Kyekyewere. Investigations revealed that the two convicts conspired with other accomplices, who are still at large, to carry out the attack.
Police disclosed that Francis Oppong, a resident of Kyekyewere, monitored the victim’s movements and provided key intelligence that enabled the gang to raid the victim’s residence and mining site. During the attack, the victim was assaulted and sustained injuries.
Items stolen during the robbery included a pump-action gun, a Huawei mobile phone valued at GH¢1,200, 18 pounds of gold estimated at GH¢100,000, and GH¢2,000 in cash.
