The Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed all party members and groups involved in early presidential campaign activities to stop immediately.
The directive follows a meeting between the Council of Elders and President John Dramani Mahama, who is also the party’s leader, on May 29, 2026.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Council said it had observed growing concerns within the party and among the public over reports of premature presidential campaigns and related political activities by some individuals and groups.
The Council stressed that the party’s current focus is on supporting the government in delivering on its mandate and improving the lives of Ghanaians.
According to the statement, all party members are expected to channel their efforts into supporting the government’s Reset Agenda instead of engaging in activities that could create division or internal competition.
The Council also cited Article 42 of the NDC Constitution, which outlines the timelines for electing a presidential candidate.
It explained that the National Executive Committee (NEC) is responsible for determining when presidential primaries will be held and that no individual or group has been authorised to begin campaigning ahead of that process.
The Council emphasised that until the appropriate constitutional procedures are activated and an official timetable is announced, no person or interest group should engage in campaigning, endorsements, mobilisation, publicity, or any activity aimed at promoting a prospective presidential candidate.
It therefore directed all those involved in such activities to stop immediately.
The statement further called on party members to remain united and focus on helping the government deliver on its promises to Ghanaians.
“The time for internal contests will come. For now, our collective responsibility is to serve the nation and successfully implement the mandate entrusted to us,” the Council stated.
