Minister of Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku has openly declared his readiness to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2028 general election if party members choose him as their preferred candidate.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, Opoku said he remains open to any opportunity politics presents, stressing that his primary motivation has always been service to Ghana.

“I’m open to any good thing politics gives me. I came into politics with the commitment to serve,” he stated.

The minister described himself as a problem-solver, arguing that his track record in public service demonstrates his ability to tackle difficult challenges and deliver results.

“I’m a troubleshooter. Any problems that come my way, I’m able to solve them,” he said.

When asked about the possibility of contesting the NDC’s presidential primaries, Opoku said he would not hesitate if party members believe he is the right person to succeed President John Mahama.

“So if today the party members believe that I’m the best person to lead the party and the country, I am willing to,” he added.

While expressing his willingness to seek higher office, the Agriculture Minister stressed that leadership should be about creating a lasting positive impact rather than personal ambition.

“The most important thing is that we do something that we will be recognised positively for in history,” he noted.

His comments come as discussions intensify over who could emerge as the NDC’s next flagbearer after President Mahama. Several prominent names, including Asiedu Nketiah, Haruna Iddrisu, Julius Debrah and Ato Forson, have already been mentioned as possible contenders.

Opoku’s latest remarks are likely to fuel further debate about the future leadership of the governing party ahead of the 2028 elections.
