The Ministry of Health has summoned the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to explain a decision by the hospital’s management to halt the admission of new emergency cases.

In a statement, the ministry said it had taken note of a social media announcement titled, “KATH Accident and Emergency Centre Full and Unable to Admit New Cases Management,” as well as comments made by the hospital’s Head of Public Affairs on Channel One TV, which appeared to confirm the development.

According to the ministry, the hospital’s position contradicts a directive issued by President John Dramani Mahama that no health facility should turn away emergency cases.

The ministry stressed that all emergency patients must continue to receive care regardless of challenges facing health facilities.

As a result, the CEO of KATH has been directed to appear before Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh by 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

The ministry said the appearance is intended to allow the hospital chief executive to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for actions deemed inconsistent with the President’s directive.

The development comes amid public concern over capacity pressures at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Centre, one of the country’s busiest referral facilities serving patients from across the Ashanti Region and beyond.

The Ministry of Health has not yet indicated what specific disciplinary measures could be considered following the meeting.
