The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has shut down portions of the Ashaiman China Mall warehouse after discovering suspected substandard products, including mattresses and electrical appliances, during an enforcement operation.

The exercise formed part of the Authority’s ongoing nationwide crackdown on the production and distribution of inferior goods on the Ghanaian market.

Speaking to the media after the operation on Tuesday, May 19, GSA Regional Manager Clement Kubati disclosed that several products failed quality tests conducted by the Authority.

According to him, all 15 electrical bulbs sampled during the inspection were found to be fake and potentially dangerous to consumers.

He warned that the substandard bulbs pose serious fire risks in homes and other facilities.

Kubati stated that the GSA would secure the affected products, including mattresses and electrical bulbs, and lock up the warehouse while legal processes continue.

He further revealed that managers of the facility would be fined as part of measures to deter others from engaging in similar illegal activities.

“Ghana is not a dumping ground for substandard products,” he stressed.

The GSA also disclosed that the operators were allegedly manufacturing products without the required licence.

Managers of the facility are expected to appear before the Authority to respond to the violations and face the necessary legal consequences.
