The European Union (EU) has formalized a major waste management and climate resilience initiative in Tamale as part of the €55.5 million Sustainable Cities Project.
H.E. Rune Skinnebach, the EU Ambassador to Ghana, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamale Metropolitan and Sagnarigu Municipal Assemblies to establish an Interjurisdictional Coordination Management Committee (ICMC).
The Ambassador said the ICMC will synchronize urban planning and solid waste management across the “Greater Tamale” area to address climate-related challenges like flooding and poor sanitation.
He said the project includes delivering faecal sludge treatment plants, individual household toilets, and improved waste collection systems. Climate Action: The launch coincided with a 7-day, 800km cycling tour led by Ambassador Skinnebach from Tamale to Accra to raise awareness for environmental sustainability and climate action.
During the Tamale launch, the delegation planted trees at the Tamale forest, with a goal to plant approximately 1,000 trees along the route to Accra.
Ambassador Skinnebach emphasized that the EU’s commitment to Ghana extends beyond trade to environmental preservation.
