Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare is still without a foreign club despite continued efforts by his representatives to secure an overseas move following his impressive performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to Ghanaian sports journalist Rahman Osman, Asare’s agents have presented his CV to several clubs in Europe and other parts of the world, with several potential deals reportedly coming close to completion before eventually collapsing.
Osman revealed that an agreement had recently been reached for Asare to join a club in Azerbaijan on loan, but the move fell through after concerns emerged over the length of time required to obtain his work permit.
“There are deals that are very close, yet it just seems very difficult to cross the line. Honestly, they’ve been working incredibly hard to get him a club. Just last week, there was a deal almost done about $60,000 to $70,000 for a nine-month loan in Azerbaijan. I have the documents here. Everyone agreed for Asare to go, but they later found out it would take six to seven weeks to get a work permit, so the deal didn’t happen,” Osman explained in a video shared on X.
He said Asare’s age and existing contract with Hearts of Oak are also making negotiations more difficult.
According to Osman, several interested clubs would prefer to sign the goalkeeper as a free agent rather than pay a transfer fee to Hearts, where he still has one year remaining on his contract.
“So many clubs have shown interest. But because he has one year left on his Hearts of Oak deal, they want him on a free transfer, which doesn’t make sense,” he said.
Osman compared Asare’s situation with that of fellow Ghanaian goalkeeper Solomon Agbesi, who returned from the World Cup as a free agent and was therefore able to secure a move to South Africa more easily.
He explained that Asare’s situation is different because clubs must consider his age, the remaining period on his contract and the potential cost of the transfer.
“Asare, however, still has a contract, and with his age, it’s difficult. Clubs are considering the age, the contract, and the costs involved. That’s why I said, just pray for Asare,” Osman added.
Asare has since returned to training with Hearts of Oak and is expected to begin the new season as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper while his representatives continue searching for an overseas opportunity.
With only a few days remaining in the transfer window, the goalkeeper’s immediate future remains uncertain despite the interest generated by his World Cup performances.
