The Ghana Football Association (GFA) says it will pay close attention to President John Dramani Mahama’s concerns about the standard of officiating in the country’s domestic football.
President Mahama recently raised concerns about refereeing during a meeting with representatives of Medeama SC, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa at Jubilee House, prompting a response from the football governing body.
However, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said the President’s comments should not be interpreted as an attack on the association.
Instead, he believes the concerns provide an opportunity for the GFA to assess its work and identify areas that need improvement.
Speaking to Luv FM, Asante Twum said the association welcomed the President’s interest in Ghanaian football and would take his observations seriously.
“It does not mean that we will be at warpath with His Excellency. It is good that he is following the sport. It is good that he has spotted certain anomalies that he feels must be checked,” he said.
According to the GFA communications director, the association has a responsibility to listen when concerns are raised by the country’s leader and ensure that the issues identified are properly addressed.
“Once the first gentleman of the land makes such assertions or claims, we just have to sit up and ensure that the things that we are doing, we do them better,” he added.
Asante Twum said the GFA remains committed to fixing areas of football administration where progress may have slowed and ensuring that the sport continues to develop.
“Those that may have fallen apart, we put things back on track and ensure that we get a better football ecosystem,” he said.
Officiating has remained one of the recurring issues in Ghanaian football, with the GFA introducing measures in recent years aimed at improving refereeing standards and protecting the integrity of domestic competitions.
The association’s response to Mahama’s concerns signals its willingness to review those efforts and continue working towards better standards across the game.
