The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed the reappointment of Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars after reaching an agreement with the Portuguese tactician on a new coaching mandate.
Queiroz’s initial four-month contract expired after Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving his future with the national team uncertain as both sides discussed the possibility of continuing their partnership.
The GFA announced on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, that the negotiations had now been concluded, with Queiroz set to begin his new stint during the next international break.
In a statement, the association said it had reached an agreement with the experienced coach to take charge of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme.
The decision means Queiroz will remain in charge following a World Cup campaign in which Ghana reached the knockout stage for the first time since 2010.
The 73-year-old was appointed in April 2026 after Otto Addo’s departure, with the immediate responsibility of preparing Ghana for the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Ghana began the World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Panama before playing out a goalless draw against England. The Black Stars then suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia before losing 1-0 to Colombia in the Round of 32.
Despite the eventual elimination, the team’s progression from the group stage marked a significant achievement for Ghana, particularly after the Black Stars had failed to advance from their group at the 2022 World Cup.
Queiroz’s next major assignment will be Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24, 2026, before returning home to host The Gambia in Accra three days later.
The GFA believes Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and familiarity with the Black Stars make him well suited to lead the team through the next stage of its development.
His reappointment now allows the Portuguese coach to build on his World Cup campaign and prepare Ghana for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers and other major international assignments.
