A Ghanaian university graduate, Mercy Yaaba Bredu, has died in China just two days after leaving the country to pursue further studies.

Mercy, a former Vice President of the Association of Students of English (ASSENS) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in 2024, reportedly collapsed at an airport shortly after arriving in China.

According to a report by MyJoyOnline.com on August 26, 2026, Mercy was a first-class student who travelled to China with plans to pursue a master’s degree and explore educational and career opportunities.

She reportedly departed Ghana on Monday, August 24, 2026, after being seen off at the Accra International Airport by family members and friends.

Her flight is said to have left Ghana at about 1:30 p.m.

During the journey, Mercy reportedly complained of experiencing heart pain.

Shortly after arriving in China, she suddenly collapsed at the airport while receiving a bouquet.

She was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment as efforts were made to save her life.

However, she died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, only two days after leaving Ghana.

Her sudden death has left her family, friends, former colleagues and members of the ASSENS community devastated.

Tributes and messages of condolence have since emerged following news of the death of the young graduate, whose life and plans for further education were cut short so unexpectedly.
