The driver of the State Transport Corporation (STC) bus involved in the deadly fire outbreak at Birimso Bridge on the Accra-Kumasi Highway has shared a chilling account of the moments after the crash that claimed several lives.
Speaking in a video circulating on social media, the visibly distressed driver said the bus was carrying 31 passengers when the accident occurred.
According to him, only about 10 people managed to escape from the burning vehicle, while the remaining passengers were trapped inside and reportedly died in the inferno.
“We were about 31 people on the bus. The number of people we were able to get out was about 10, and the rest got burnt,” he recounted.
The tragic crash has sparked widespread grief, with emergency responders and security agencies continuing efforts at the scene.
Earlier, the Ghana Police Service confirmed that the accident, which involved an STC passenger bus, a loaded articulated truck and a sedan, completely blocked the N6 Highway at Birimso Bridge.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 3, 2026, the police said the collision brought traffic to a standstill in both directions.
“There is a pile-up road crash at Birimso Bridge on the N6 Highway (Accra-Kumasi Highway), involving a high-occupancy passenger bus, a loaded articulated truck, and a sedan, resulting in a complete blockade of the road for both Accra-bound and Kumasi-bound traffic,” the statement said.
The Eastern South Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) from Kibi was immediately deployed to manage traffic and coordinate emergency operations.
To ease congestion, police diverted Accra-bound vehicles through Kibi at Nsutam, while motorists travelling towards Kumasi were redirected through Apedwa.
The diversions remain in place as authorities continue clearing the wreckage and investigating the cause of the fatal collision.
The Ghana Police Service has urged motorists to cooperate with officers on duty and exercise caution while using the designated alternative routes.
