Former NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, says the legal team of TikToker Camilla Alhassan is preparing to appeal her one-year prison sentence.
Alhassan was convicted after pleading guilty to charges of offensive conduct and publication of false news.
In a statement issued after the sentencing, Nana B criticised the handling of the case and claimed that Alhassan was arrested on July 9 and taken before a court without access to legal representation or contact with her family.
According to him, the lack of legal advice led her to enter a guilty plea.
Nana B also alleged that when Alhassan’s relatives and lawyers later found her at the Spintex Police Station, she had been physically assaulted. He said the allegation was acknowledged in the presence of a senior police officer.
He further stated that Alhassan’s lawyers filed an application on July 13 seeking to have her plea retaken so the matter could proceed to trial, and that the application had been scheduled for hearing on July 23.
However, Nana B claimed that when Alhassan appeared before the Circuit Court, the presiding judge proceeded to sentence her to one year in prison without addressing the pending application.
“The judge failed to even acknowledge the pendency of the consequential application for her plea to be re-taken,” he said.
Nana B argued that the case raises broader concerns about freedom of expression and accused the government of using law enforcement agencies against critics.
He said Alhassan’s lawyers are now taking steps to challenge both the conviction and the sentence on appeal.
