The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, has made an emotional appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in the ongoing legal cases involving Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking during a live interview on Prime Rakon on June 15, 2026, Yandoh went on his knees and pleaded with the President to ensure that Wontumi does not end up in prison.

According to him, the outcome of the ongoing prosecutions could result in Wontumi, who is seeking the NPP national chairmanship position, being jailed unless President Mahama steps in.

“We know that there were excesses in some of the cases, and if you don’t come in, it would only end with… We are on our knees, begging; please intervene in this matter.

“Don’t let Wontumi go to prison; I’m on my knees begging, Mr President. We know you are a father for all; please don’t let Wontumi go, don’t let him go (to prison). We are on our knees begging,” he said in Twi.

Yandoh further appealed directly to the President, urging him to use his influence to help bring the matter to a close.

“Please intervene so that Wontumi would not go to prison. We know that if you speak, the matter will come to an end. Mr President, have mercy on Wontumi,” he added.

The NPP communicator had earlier expressed concerns about the outcome of Wontumi’s ongoing legal battles.

Speaking on Okay FM on June 12, 2026, Yandoh said comments made by Wontumi’s former lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, and discussions surrounding the case had led him to believe that the Ashanti Regional Chairman could be jailed.

Despite that possibility, he maintained that Wontumi would still emerge victorious in the NPP national chairmanship race even if he were incarcerated.

“When you listen to lawyer Appiah-Kubi, he says if the court follows the law and not public opinion, Wontumi will not be guilty of any crime. So, if a lawyer says this, is it not prison that you are going to?

“That would mean Wontumi will be the first national chairman to be elected while in prison. And the NDC government will have no option but to release him. We will vote for him, and we will vote for him even in prison,” Yandoh stated.

Meanwhile, the High Court in Accra has scheduled July 3, 2026, to deliver judgment in one of the cases involving Chairman Wontumi.

The case relates to allegations of illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

Wontumi is currently being represented by Samuel Atta Akyea, who recently took over the case after former counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi withdrew from representing him.
