WASSCE candidate dies after reportedly leaving campus without permission

A final-year student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School (KSTS), identified as Apassa Isaac, has reportedly died after allegedly leaving the school campus without permission during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The incident was first reported by Jasper Ziggle in a social media post on June 15, 2026.

According to the report, Isaac had successfully written his English Language paper before reportedly leaving the school premises without authorization and heading into town.

Shortly after leaving the campus, he is said to have fallen ill and was rushed to a health facility for medical treatment.

Reports indicate that he was diagnosed with severe malaria upon arrival at the hospital. However, despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, he reportedly passed away.

The circumstances surrounding his decision to leave the school compound remain unclear.

The incident has sparked sadness among students, teachers, and members of the public, particularly as it occurred during the ongoing WASSCE examinations.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities of Koforidua Senior High Technical School had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

It also remains unclear whether any further investigations will be conducted into the circumstances leading to the student’s death.

The reported death comes at a time when thousands of final-year students across the country are participating in the 2026 WASSCE examinations.
