President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish a new national airline as part of efforts to transform Ghana into a major aviation and business hub in West Africa.

Speaking at the Ghana-UK Investment Summit 2026 in London on June 1, 2026, Mahama said the proposed national carrier will play a key role in improving Ghana’s connectivity with major international markets and supporting trade, tourism, and exports.

The president, who is on an official visit to the United Kingdom, is engaging investors and key stakeholders to deepen economic ties between Ghana and the UK.

According to him, the government is investing heavily in aviation infrastructure to accommodate increasing passenger traffic and cargo movement while improving the efficiency of air transport services.

“We are expanding airport infrastructure and pursuing the establishment of a new national airline to improve connectivity and facilitate trade, tourism, and exports between Ghana and major international markets, including, of course, the United Kingdom,” Mahama stated.

He stressed that better air connectivity is essential for attracting investment, boosting tourism, and supporting Ghanaian businesses seeking access to global markets.

The president also highlighted ongoing efforts to modernise the country’s ports and logistics systems to strengthen Ghana’s position as a preferred destination for trade and investment in Africa.

“We are also modernising our ports and logistics systems to strengthen Ghana’s position as the preferred trade and investment gateway to Africa,” he added.

The proposed airline forms part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance transportation infrastructure and drive economic growth. It would mark Ghana’s return to operating a national carrier years after the collapse of previous state-backed airlines.
