The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, announced on April 10, 2026, the deployment of 6,500 laptops as part of the nationwide rollout of the 1 Million Coders Programme.

This initial batch of devices is primarily destined for 130 learning centres established across all 16 regions of Ghana, with each centre receiving 50 customized laptops. He said approximately 8,500 laptops were presented in total during this phase.

This includes the 6,500 for regional learning centres and an additional 2,000 laptops allocated to 12 universities, such as the University of Ghana and KNUST.

According to him the 130 learning centres are managed by newly recruited technical officers and the laptops are specialized for the program, featuring factory firmware with custom backdrops and embedded tracking chips to deter theft.

Mr. Nartey George said while the 6,500 laptops came from government stock, MTN Ghana contributed approximately $2 million to help procure additional devices for participating universities with the initiative aiming to equip one million Ghanaian youth with digital skills in areas like coding, AI, cybersecurity, and data analysis to enhance global competitiveness and employability.

He stressed that the full rollout follows a pilot phase that trained roughly 1,000 participants with the application portal expected to reopen shortly for new and returning applicants.
