Chief Justice nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has suggested introducing artificial intelligence (AI) into Ghana’s judicial system to assist in assigning judges to cases more fairly and transparently.
Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, November 10, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie argued that AI could help minimize human bias, enhance efficiency, and strengthen public confidence in how judicial panels are formed.
While acknowledging that the current manual selection process functions, he noted that it occasionally raises doubts among litigants and lawyers about the fairness of judge assignments.
“We should consider empanelling an AI panel of judges. AI will be a very good thing for empanelling,” he stated, emphasizing that such an innovation could bring greater transparency and credibility to the judicial system.
His proposal was made during a high-profile vetting session that followed the controversial removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, an event that has sparked public debate and led the Parliamentary Minority to boycott the proceedings.
