Former Minister for Communications and long-serving Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially declared her intention to contest the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The announcement was made via her official Facebook page on Monday, October 20—coinciding with her birthday. In a heartfelt message to party faithful, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful called for support to help rebuild and reposition the NPP as a strong contender ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“Dearest Patriots, I come to you on this day of my birth with genuine regards. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since our stormy face-off with ourselves and our base. We came out bruised… but as our great tradition has shown over the years, we will thrive,” she wrote.
Acknowledging the party’s recent internal challenges, she urged members not to lose hope, framing the current difficulties as a phase of self-reflection and necessary renewal.
“Scathed, we refuse to be burnt. And even if we set ourselves ablaze… we will rise. It will shape us, mould us, and like the Phoenix, we will rise and be ready.”
A Swipe at the NDC
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful also criticized the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, describing it as a “caretaker government” that gained power through deception and broken promises.
“This caretaker NDC government is not there because it is preferred. It lied its way into government with lofty promises, causing belief in us to wane. But we will revive it.”
A Vision for Unity and Revival
Outlining her vision, she promised to restore unity and confidence within the NPP—starting from the grassroots and extending to the national level.
“From polling stations, to electoral areas, constituencies, and regions—we will restore confidence and unity in our party. That is the only dose we need to boot out this accident-of-a-government.”
Describing herself as “nurtured, proven, and prepared,” she positioned her candidacy as a rallying point for the party’s regeneration.
“On this day of my birth, Patriots, I come before you—the fighter you’ve always known—to join you on this collective journey to rescue our beloved country from this clueless, insensitive, and glaringly incompetent government.”
She concluded her declaration with a passionate call for unity and collective action:
“Patriots, join me. Let us commit to the struggle. With unity, God on our side, and the will of the Ghanaian people, we shall overcome.”
