Ghanaian middle-distance runner Alex Amankwah has been eliminated from the men’s 800 metres at the World Athletics Championships, after failing to qualify for the semi-finals.

Amankwah finished eighth in Heat 7, posting a time of 1:45.08—insufficient to progress to the next round.

The heat was won by former world champion Donavan Brazier of the United States, who clocked 1:44.66. He was closely followed by Algeria’s Slimane Moula (1:44.77) and Croatia’s Marino Bloudek (1:44.78), who completed the top three.

Amankwah’s early exit continues a challenging campaign for Team Ghana in Tokyo.

In the sprints, Abdul Rasheed Saminu narrowly missed a place in the men’s 100m final after finishing fourth in his semi-final, while Benjamin Azamati was eliminated in the opening round, coming sixth in his heat.

Ghana’s hopes now turn to Ibrahim Fuseini, who is set to compete in the men’s 200 metres on Wednesday, September 17.
