Athletic Bilbao head coach Ernesto Valverde has expressed hope that Iñaki Williams’ injury is not serious, following the forward’s early exit during Saturday’s La Liga clash against RCD Mallorca at San Mamés.
Williams, who recently returned from international duty with Ghana, had opened the scoring from the penalty spot, helping Los Leones secure a much-needed 2-1 win.
However, early in the second half, the 31-year-old appeared to suffer a fitness issue and was forced off, visibly limping as he made way for his younger brother, Nico Williams.
Speaking to the media after the match, Coach Valverde addressed concerns about the striker’s condition:
“We’re hopeful it’s nothing too serious. He felt some discomfort and we decided not to take any risks,” Valverde said. “We’ll assess him further in the coming days.”
The injury scare comes at a crucial time for both club and country, with key fixtures ahead in the La Liga season and World Cup qualifiers for Ghana.
