Two men have been arrested at Osu Cemetery for illegally digging a grave, following intensified efforts by the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly to curb unlawful exhumations and the unauthorised sale of burial spaces.
Hon. George Abeiku Annan, Assemblyman for the Kinkawe Electoral Area, who worked with the security task force, confirmed the arrests.
“This action is part of our commitment to restoring order and protecting public cemeteries in the municipality,” he said.
The suspects, identified as Eric Annan and Joseph Donkor, were apprehended in the early hours of Friday, February 6, during a joint operation involving the cemetery sexton and officers from the security task force. They have since been handed over to the Osu Police for further investigation and potential prosecution under the law.
The arrests follow a press conference held on Thursday, February 5, by the Municipal Chief Executive, which highlighted concerns over illegal exhumations and the unauthorised sale of burial plots at Osu Cemetery. In response, the assembly deployed a security task force to monitor the facility and prevent further violations.
The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on unlawful activities at public cemeteries.
“We will ensure that all illegal and unethical practices are brought to an end,” the assembly stated, emphasizing its commitment to protecting the dignity of the deceased and maintaining the integrity of burial grounds.
