Accra, Ghana—Government Spokesperson and Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has strongly criticized the former Akufo-Addo–Bawumia administration, asserting that their “fiscal recklessness” directly caused Ghana’s current economic crisis.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu argued that the failure to manage public funds with discipline defined the previous government’s economic record, resulting in an unsustainable national debt burden.
“Everybody knows that the problem of the NPP, admittedly, governments before them have also had that problem, was that they were indisciplined as far as the fiscal management of the Ghanaian economy was concerned,” he stated.
Discipline as the Anchor of Recovery
In sharp contrast, the MP maintained that the current administration’s performance is anchored on strict spending control.
“What has defined the performance of this government is discipline, fiscal discipline,” he said, drawing a parallel to personal finance. “Even in our own lives, if you live beyond your means, you’re always going to be in debt.” He insisted that the New Patriotic Party government failed this basic test of prudence.
Critics of the former administration have consistently pointed to excessive borrowing, unchecked expenditure, and weak financial controls as the root causes of Ghana’s economic collapse, while supporters of the NPP have largely blamed external shocks. Mr Kwakye Ofosu, however, maintained that the core problem was internal and avoidable.
He concluded that fiscal restraint is now at the heart of the current government’s policy actions, designed to restore confidence, stabilize the cedi, and rebuild credibility with international partners essential to Ghana’s recovery efforts.
