A school principal who was shot when an armed teenager stormed a school in southern Thailand has died from her injuries, authorities have confirmed.
Sasiphat Sinsamosorn was critically wounded after an 18-year-old gunman entered Phatong Prathan Keeriwat School, near the city of Hat Yai, shortly before 17:00 local time (10:00 GMT) on Wednesday. A female student was also shot during the incident.
Police said Sasiphat succumbed to her injuries before dawn on Thursday. The injured student remains in stable condition, while another student who was hurt after jumping from a window during the ordeal is still receiving hospital treatment.
The suspect was taken into custody following a tense two-hour standoff that left several teachers and students trapped inside the school building.
Authorities have not yet established a clear motive for the attack, though local media reports indicate the gunman may have had a dispute with a member of staff.
In a message posted on Facebook, the school extended its “deepest condolences” over the principal’s death, describing her as someone whose “memories and kindness will forever remain in our hearts.”
Thailand has relatively high levels of gun violence, with firearms widely owned both legally and illegally. The country has experienced a number of deadly shootings in recent years.
