Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to halt unauthorized tuition fee increases in public universities.
Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, Iddrisu expressed concern that some institutions were exploiting the government’s “No Fees Stress Policy” to impose unjustified fee hikes.
Key Points:
- No Fees Stress Policy: The policy provides free tertiary education for first-year students and persons with disabilities.
 - Unauthorized Fee Hikes: Iddrisu cautioned universities against increasing fees without authorization, emphasizing the government’s commitment to easing the financial burden on students and families.
 - GTEC Review: The Ministry of Education is reviewing the policy mandating private universities to acquire a presidential charter within ten years of establishment.
 - Student Loan Review: The Minister also hinted at reviewing the interest rate structure for the Students Loan Trust Fund to make repayment more considerate for graduates struggling to find employment.
