Senegal forward Sadio Mané has cautioned that success at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is not always determined by technical superiority, stressing that mentality often proves decisive as the tournament progresses.
Speaking ahead of Senegal’s quarter-final encounter with Mali, the former AFCON winner noted that the competition presents challenges that go beyond footballing skill, requiring strong mental discipline and focus from players.
According to Mané, teams must navigate pressure, expectations and unpredictable conditions, making mental strength just as important as talent.
“The best team does not always win the Africa Cup of Nations. Mentality plays a huge role, especially considering the many challenges that come with this competition,” he said.
The Senegal captain, who helped the Teranga Lions lift the trophy in the past, urged his teammates to remain calm, humble and fully concentrated on each match as the knockout stages intensify.
“We will try to stay humble and grounded, and above all, approach every game on its own,” Mané added.
Senegal have impressed at the tournament with a blend of experience and youthful energy, but Mané warned against complacency, pointing out that AFCON’s unpredictable nature demands discipline and consistency.
The defending champions face Mali in what is expected to be a tough quarter-final clash, with both sides known for their physical approach and tactical organisation. Senegal will be hoping to combine their quality with the right mindset as they continue their push for continental glory.
