United States forward Trinity Rodman has become the highest-paid female footballer in the world after signing a three-year contract with Washington Spirit, her agent has confirmed.

The 23-year-old, daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman, had been a free agent since her previous deal with the Spirit expired on 31 December. Her new contract, reportedly worth $2 million (£1.5 million) per year including bonuses, will keep her at the club until 2028.

Her agent, Mike Senkowski, told ESPN that the deal elevates Rodman to the top of women’s football in terms of earnings.

“It feels amazing. I’m very happy. I’m very blessed,” Rodman said. “I think it’s a monumental and game-changing moment right now. I can’t even describe in words what it feels like.”

Before Rodman’s deal, Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati, three-time Ballon d’Or winner (2023, 2024, 2025), was reportedly the highest-paid female player.

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) had a salary cap of $3.5 million (£2.6 million) per team in 2025. However, a new ‘High Impact Player’ rule approved in December allows clubs to spend an additional $1 million (£760,000) over the cap on players meeting specific criteria, paving the way for Rodman’s record-breaking deal.

“Trinity is a generational player, but more importantly, she represents the future of this club and the future of women’s soccer,” said Washington Spirit owner Michele Kang.

Rodman, who helped Spirit win the NWSL Championship in her debut season in 2021, was named NWSL Rookie of the Year that same year. She has earned 47 caps for the USA, scoring 11 goals since her debut in 2022, and netted three goals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the United States won gold.

Her father, Dennis Rodman, won five NBA championships with the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls.
