Former Minister of Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has strongly condemned the dismissal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Mahama, describing it as a “grave threat” to Ghana’s democratic foundations.

In a statement on Tuesday, Asenso-Boakye alleged that the removal was not a mere coincidence, but part of a calculated effort to undermine the independence of the judiciary.

“This action strikes at the heart of our democracy and must not be taken lightly,” he asserted.

He warned that dismissing a Chief Justice on what he called “flimsy grounds” could set a dangerous precedent, instilling fear among judges and eroding their ability to defend the Constitution without bias or intimidation.

“This is not just an attack on one individual—it is an assault on the very foundation of our Republic,” he emphasized.

Asenso-Boakye called on Ghanaians to remain vigilant and to resist any attempts to weaken democratic institutions, stressing that the country’s progress in upholding the rule of law must be protected.

“Ghana deserves better,” he concluded.
