The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate Daasebre Ayimadu Kantamanto II, Chief of Akyem Kwabeng and Gyasehene of the Akyem Abuakwa State.

The suspects, identified as Emelia Akua Asor (47) and Seth Butuakwa (48), were apprehended on Sunday, October 12, after police intelligence officers infiltrated the group suspected of planning the attack.

Foiled Plot

According to the police, the suspects allegedly attempted to hire contract killers, offering GH¢50,000 upfront, with a promise of an additional GH¢50,000 upon successful execution of the plan. The assassination was reportedly timed to take place ahead of the chief’s first royal durbar, scheduled for Friday in Akyem Kwabeng.

“At about 10 a.m. on Saturday, the command received credible intelligence regarding a plot to eliminate the chief,” the police said in an official report.

Following the tip-off, a team from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) launched a covert operation to infiltrate the group.

During the operation, suspect Emelia Asor allegedly engaged undercover officers, believing they were hired assassins. She instructed Seth Butuakwa to accompany the officers to Akyem Kwabeng to identify the target locations, including the residence of the chief and a woman believed to be the newly appointed Queenmother.

Evidence and Arrest

“Butuakwa led the officers to both locations and provided them with a photograph of the chief,” the report revealed. “They reaffirmed the promise of an additional GH¢50,000 after the completion of the task.”

Both suspects were immediately arrested and are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.

The police say further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
