More than 250 media organisations across 70 countries have participated in a coordinated front-page protest condemning the killing of journalists in Israel’s war on Gaza, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
The campaign, launched on Monday, September 1, calls attention to what RSF describes as the targeted killing of media professionals, with at least 220 journalists confirmed dead since the conflict began on October 7, 2023.
“At the rate journalists are being killed in Gaza by the Israeli army, there will soon be no one left to keep you informed,” said Thibaut Bruttin, RSF’s general director.
The campaign, supported by global advocacy group Avaaz, appeared on the homepages and front pages of several major news outlets, including Al Jazeera, The Independent (UK), La Croix and L’Humanité (France), as well as Germany’s Tageszeitung and Frankfurter Rundschau.
Independent investigations by Al Jazeera indicate that at least 278 journalists and media workers have died during the 22-month conflict, including 10 journalists from its own network.
The protest comes amid growing international pressure for accountability and protection of press freedom in conflict zones. The Gaza war, marked by one of the highest journalist death tolls in modern history, has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights groups and press freedom advocates.
