Officials from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Ashanti Region are urging the establishment of post-crash emergency response centers along the Kumasi-Accra highway to ensure rapid intervention in the event of accidents.

The call comes in response to years of frequent and often fatal crashes on the busy highway, which continue to claim lives and leave many victims with severe, life-altering injuries. Fire service personnel, who are frequently first on the scene, say dedicated emergency centers would significantly improve response times and save lives.

The Asante Akim Central Municipal Commander of the GNFS, D.O II Joe Bryden, highlighted that the high rate of accidents—largely attributed to speeding and reckless overtaking—has made travel along Ghana’s busiest highway increasingly dangerous.

“The number of accidents along this stretch is alarming,” Bryden said. “Setting up emergency response centers is a critical step to ensure timely assistance and better outcomes for accident victims.”

The ongoing safety concerns have prompted broader calls for immediate action, with some public figures and organizations even suggesting that the highway be declared a national emergency to prioritize interventions.

Emergency response centers, proponents argue, could play a key role in reducing fatalities and improving road safety along one of Ghana’s most heavily trafficked routes.
