Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a prominent member of Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team, has criticized the messaging strategy of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s camp in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race, describing it as misleading and divisive.
His comments come in response to recent remarks by Elikem Kotoko of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who accused Dr. Bawumia of politicizing the death of former Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi, during a condolence visit to the late MP’s family.
Dr. Boakye-Danquah questioned the logic behind the Bawumia campaign’s narrative that the NPP needs only “9% more” to win the 2028 general election—based on the party’s 41% showing in 2024.
“I’ve avoided speaking about this so-called ‘9% pe’ left to win,” he said. “Some of the comments around it—you’re not sure whether they’re scientific, unscientific, or just voodoo analysis.”
He argued that the party’s focus should not be on numerical assumptions, but rather on uniting its base, especially parliamentary candidates who will be critical to electoral success in 2028.
“We haven’t even completed our internal primaries, and yet some assume they’ve already won and just need 9% more. Let’s not forget, in 2024, the parliamentary candidates collectively secured 5 million votes while our presidential candidate got only 4 million—the lowest for any presidential candidate in the Fourth Republic,” he pointed out.
Dr. Boakye-Danquah emphasized the need for a flagbearer who can unify the party and restore voter confidence, rather than one leaning on questionable electoral math.
Tensions have been rising within the NPP as the flagbearer contest intensifies, with camps for Dr. Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong trading pointed criticisms ahead of the party’s internal elections.
