Residents of Tema Community 1 were left shocked and deeply saddened on Sunday, January 4, after the body of a newborn baby was discovered in a major sewage tunnel near the Standard Chartered Bank.
The discovery was made during a community clean-up exercise aimed at clearing a severe blockage in the local sewage system. The obstruction had caused wastewater to overflow onto surrounding streets, prompting residents to take action.
While manually clearing solid waste from the underground tunnel, volunteers retrieved a heavy black polythene bag lodged within the blockage. Upon opening it, they were horrified to find the remains of a newborn baby, believed to have been abandoned shortly after birth.
News of the incident quickly spread, drawing a large crowd to the scene. Many residents expressed anger and grief, condemning the act and calling for justice for the infant.
An eyewitness, identified as Daniel, described the incident as one of the most disturbing experiences he had ever encountered. He said the baby had been discarded without any regard for human dignity, leaving community members deeply distressed.
The matter has since drawn public attention, with calls for authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
