Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged victorious in the Akwatia by-election, securing a significant win for the ruling party in one of the year’s most closely watched contests.
According to certified results from the Electoral Commission, Bediako garnered 18,199 votes out of 33,819 valid ballots cast. His main challenger, Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 15,235 votes. Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) came in a distant third with just 82 votes. An additional 303 ballots were rejected.
The by-election was held following the passing of sitting MP Ernest Kumi earlier this year. In the weeks leading up to the vote, both the NDC and NPP mounted vigorous campaigns, deploying significant resources and personnel in a bid to sway voters in this historically competitive constituency.
Voting took place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, across 119 polling stations in Akwatia. Polls closed at 5 p.m., followed by counting and verification in the presence of party agents, election officials, security personnel, and independent observers.
The announcement of Bediako’s win sparked spontaneous celebrations among NDC supporters, who took to the streets of Akwatia in joyous song and dance.
Political observers say the NDC’s win in Akwatia — a traditional swing seat — could signal growing support for the party ahead of the 2028 general elections. The constituency has alternated between the NDC and NPP in previous cycles, making this victory all the more meaningful for the ruling party.
Bernard Bediako now assumes the role of Member of Parliament for Akwatia. In his victory remarks, he pledged to honor the legacy of his predecessor while pushing forward with the government’s development plans for the area.
