Morocco’s Youth Protest for Fourth Night, Demand Investment in Schools and Hospitals Over World Cup

Morocco entered its fourth consecutive night of youth-led protests as frustration mounted over poor public services and the government’s multi-billion-dollar spending on preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Thousands of young Moroccans took to the streets across major cities on Tuesday night, demanding improvements in education and healthcare, while criticizing authorities for prioritizing international prestige over the country’s pressing social needs.

The protests, among the largest youth mobilizations in recent years, were sparked by anger over deteriorating conditions in public schools and hospitals, particularly in underdeveloped regions where jobs and services are scarce. Clashes erupted in several cities as demonstrators faced off with security forces.

“We need hospitals, not stadiums,” one protester shouted during a demonstration in Rabat’s market district, echoing a sentiment widely shared on social media.

The unrest comes despite government pledges to invest in social services alongside World Cup infrastructure projects. However, many tech-savvy, Gen Z Moroccans remain skeptical, pointing to years of unfulfilled promises and rising living costs.

Over the weekend, dozens of peaceful demonstrators were detained, prompting further outrage. On Tuesday, the protests escalated into pockets of violence in areas hardest hit by unemployment and service gaps.

Morocco is one of three host nations, alongside Spain and Portugal, preparing for the 2030 World Cup, with major funds already allocated for stadium renovations and transportation upgrades.

As protests continue, calls are growing louder for the government to re-evaluate its priorities and respond more directly to the social and economic demands of the country’s youth.
