President John Dramani Mahama has issued a firm directive to the contractor working on the Ofankor–Nsawam road project, urging the company to complete the work by the agreed deadline of June 2026.

During an inspection visit to the site on Wednesday, September 3, President Mahama emphasised the importance of the project, which links Accra and Kumasi—Ghana’s two largest cities. He highlighted the severe inconvenience caused by construction delays and raised concerns over financial accountability.

“A loan was taken for this project and I don’t understand why the money is finished and the project is not over,” the President stated.
“We are now having to pay an additional GH¢78 million from government funds. We need to investigate what went wrong — whether it was inaccurate estimates or something else.”

While acknowledging some recent improvements in traffic flow, President Mahama urged the contractor to enhance site management to further ease disruptions for motorists during construction.

“So we will hold you to your word. You say by the end of the second quarter next year, you should be finished,” he cautioned.

He added that the project has been incorporated into the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme, which has committed over GH¢14 billion this year, with GH¢30 billion expected in 2026 to ensure consistent funding.

“As the government commits to paying you on time, you must also commit to speeding up the work and using quality materials,” Mahama said.

He concluded by reminding the contractor of its reputation:

“Your company is one of the most respected road construction firms in Ghana, and we expect this project to reflect the quality associated with your brand.”
