Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed claims that President John Dramani Mahama intends to pursue a third term in office, calling such allegations “an absurd fantasy.”
The statements follow assertions by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggesting that the President harbours a hidden agenda to extend his tenure beyond the constitutional two-term limit. These claims were partly based on social media posts from some National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters calling for Mahama to remain in office beyond two terms.
“The NPP have whipped themselves into needless frenzy. President Mahama has stated emphatically that he will respect the Ghanaian Constitution. Because he’s a consummate democrat, there’s no third term for him—or anyone else—under the constitution,” he said.
He added, “Some people may post on Facebook that he should go for a third term, but that does not change reality. The President himself has made it clear that he is not interested.”
Kwakye Ofosu also called on the opposition to stop what he described as baseless speculation.
“So, NPP should stop wasting their own time and everyone else’s. Any talk of a third term is a complete fantasy. The President has not expressed any such intent, and continuing to suggest otherwise is pointless,” he stressed.
President Mahama had previously reaffirmed his commitment to the constitutional two-term limit on August 27, 2025. Speaking during a bilateral meeting with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, he noted that his absence from the 2028 ballot would allow for stronger fiscal discipline and help curb the recurring election-year overspending that has contributed to cyclical economic crises.
Mahama also criticised the tendency of incumbent governments to bypass fiscal safeguards for electoral advantage, highlighting the importance of adhering to the rule of law and constitutional provisions.
