Accra, Ghana—President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a heartfelt tribute to the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a “pioneering leader” whose courage and far-reaching influence profoundly transformed Ghana’s political and social landscape, particularly in defining the role of First Lady.
In a tribute read on his behalf at the State funeral, President Mahama stated that the nation was mourning “a truly remarkable woman” whose legacy of service would resonate for generations.
“She was a towering national figure whose influence, courage, and contributions to Ghana will continue to resonate for generations,” the President noted.
Champion of Women’s Empowerment
President Mahama emphasized that Nana Konadu was “far more than a former First Lady.” He hailed her as “a pioneering leader, an unwavering champion of women’s empowerment, a trailblazer in our political landscape, and a deeply committed patriot.”
Central to this transformation was her pivotal leadership of the 31st December Women’s Movement. The President specifically recounted how, through the movement, she “expanded opportunities for women and girls, especially in rural communities where support was most needed.”
He highlighted her championing of critical social issues long before they gained national prominence, including:
- Literacy initiatives.
- Maternal health improvements.
- Early childhood education.
- Economic empowerment programs.
Mr. Mahama further recalled her passionate belief in the potential of women and young people, affirming that “She believed passionately in the transformative power of women and the potential of young people, and she dedicated her voice and influence to help uplift them.”
Describing her passing as a profound loss to both family and nation, the President concluded: “It marks the closing of an important chapter in Ghana’s political and social history, even as her example continues to inspire generations to come.”
“As we bid farewell to Nana Konadu, we celebrate a life richly lived, a life of leadership, advocacy, service, and unbroken purpose… May her beautiful soul rest in perfect peace, and may her legacy continue to guide us toward a more just, inclusive, and equitable Ghana. Ghana will remember you.”
